About TJ Maxx
TJ Maxx is an off-price retailer with U.S. stores and an online shop for apparel, shoes, handbags, beauty products and home goods. It is a brand of The TJX Companies, Inc., which also operates Marshalls and HomeGoods. These are sister brands, but TJ Maxx says its purchases cannot be returned to their stores. Share a first-hand TJ Maxx experience and rate it from −5 through +5; 0 is available for a neutral or mixed experience.
What to Include in Your Review
Identify whether you bought from a TJ Maxx store or tjmaxx.com. Include the item category, order and delivery dates, condition, receipt or shipping confirmation, the support channel used and the outcome. For a return, say when it reached the warehouse or store and whether you expected a refund or merchandise credit. Do not post a full order number, card details or other private information.
Customer Service and Store Inventory
Use the separate online-order and in-store support numbers below. Online customers can review order history and tracking in their account or use the contact form or live chat. TJ Maxx says store assortments vary and it cannot provide precise store inventory information; an online stock indicator is informational and does not reserve an item in your cart. Confirm the exact item’s availability directly before making a special trip.
Online Orders, Shipping and Cancellation
Shipping methods, charges and promotions depend on the order. TJ Maxx currently advertises free standard shipping on qualifying orders of $89 or more with code SHIP89; confirm the active offer and exclusions at checkout. Tracking generally becomes available after 8 p.m. Eastern time on the day a package ships, and a newly created carrier label may take time to show movement. Once an online order has been confirmed, TJ Maxx says it cannot change or cancel it. If the item is no longer wanted, use the applicable return process after delivery.
For a missing or damaged delivery, keep the tracking details and photos of the item and packaging and contact online customer service promptly. Shipping charges and surcharges may be nonrefundable under the return policy, except where specific terms provide otherwise.
Returns for Purchases Made in Stores
With a register receipt, TJ Maxx generally allows an eligible store purchase to be returned to a TJ Maxx store within 30 days for an exchange or refund in the original form of payment. A check purchase requires a 10-day period before a cash refund. A return after 30 days, with a gift receipt or without a receipt generally receives merchandise credit. For a no-receipt return, TJ Maxx requires a government-issued photo ID, name, address and signature, and its verification system can limit or decline returns.
Used, worn or unsellable merchandise is not accepted. Swimwear and intimate apparel require their tickets to remain attached. A purchase made at a TJ Maxx store must be returned to a TJ Maxx store, not mailed to the online warehouse or taken to Marshalls or HomeGoods.
Online Returns: 40-Day Window and Mail Fees
Eligible purchases from tjmaxx.com generally have a 40-day return window from the order date, unless the shipping confirmation states otherwise. An eligible online order can be returned free at a TJ Maxx store with its shipping confirmation or order barcode/number. For a return by mail, the package must arrive at the TJ Maxx warehouse within 40 days of the order date. Start the return in the online returns portal. TJ Maxx deducts an $11.99 return shipping and handling fee per package from the refund or merchandise credit unless the merchandise is defective.
Not every online item can be returned in store. Items priced over $1,000, handbags or footwear over $499.99, long occasion gowns and luggage sets are among the listed in-store exceptions. Final-sale designations and item-specific restrictions appear in product details or the shipping confirmation. TJ Maxx does not offer exchanges for online orders because inventory changes frequently. Gift cards cannot be returned. Check item-specific terms before sending anything back.
Refund Timing and Merchandise Credit
An eligible online return with proof of purchase within 40 days generally receives a refund to the original payment method. Returns after that window, gift returns, returns without the required order information, and purchases partly or entirely paid with a TJ Maxx gift card can instead receive merchandise credit. If an online purchase paid with PayPal is returned in store, TJ Maxx issues merchandise credit; an eligible PayPal return by mail receives a charge credit less the mail return fee. Store-issued merchandise credits can have identity and use restrictions.
TJ Maxx says qualifying mailed returns are generally credited within 10–14 business days after the warehouse receives them, depending on the bank or billing cycle. An in-store refund is processed at the counter, though the bank may take additional days to post it. Keep the carrier receipt and return tracking if refund timing is disputed.
Price Adjustments, Rewards and Gift Cards
TJ Maxx says it does not offer price adjustments for previously purchased marked-down or clearance merchandise. TJX Rewards credit-card customers can earn points toward Rewards Certificates; credit accounts and certificate problems use separate support numbers. Digital certificates can be linked to a TJX Rewards card and viewed in the TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods apps. Gift cards have their own redemption rules, and an item bought partly with one generally returns as merchandise credit. Read the current offer and card terms before making a claim about a discount or reward.
Ownership and Other TJX Brands
The TJX Companies, Inc. operates TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods in the United States. The shared parent and some cross-brand Rewards features do not make their return counters interchangeable. Identify the brand printed on your receipt and use that brand’s policy and customer service.

Frequently asked questions
TJ Maxx FAQs
How long do I have to return an in-store TJ Maxx purchase?
For an eligible purchase with a register receipt, the standard window is 30 days from purchase for an exchange or refund to the original payment method. Later, gift-receipt and no-receipt returns generally receive merchandise credit, subject to restrictions.
What is the return window for tjmaxx.com orders?
Generally 40 days from the order date, unless the shipping confirmation specifies otherwise. A mailed return needs to arrive at the warehouse within that window. Eligible online orders can be returned free to a TJ Maxx store.
Can I return TJ Maxx merchandise to Marshalls or HomeGoods?
No. TJ Maxx says store purchases must go to a TJ Maxx store and tjmaxx.com purchases must go to a TJ Maxx store or its online warehouse, as permitted by the item terms.
How much does a mailed online return cost?
TJ Maxx currently deducts $11.99 per return package from the refund or credit unless the merchandise is defective. Eligible store returns are free.
Can I cancel or exchange an online order?
Once confirmed, TJ Maxx says an order cannot be changed or canceled. It does not offer online exchanges; return an eligible item under its policy and place a separate order if the replacement is available.
What happens if I return without a receipt or paid with PayPal?
A no-receipt return may receive merchandise credit and requires identity information. For an online order paid with PayPal, a store return yields merchandise credit; an eligible return by mail yields a charge credit, less the applicable mail fee.
