REI Overview
REI Co-op, legally Recreational Equipment, Inc., sells outdoor clothing, footwear, camping gear, bikes and other equipment through stores and rei.com. It operates as a consumer cooperative with optional lifetime membership. REI Outlet and in-store Re/Supply used gear have different product and reward rules. Reviews can address fit and durability, a store experience, an online order, an equipment service, membership benefits, returns or customer support.

Van Rysel GRVL AF Bike Recall: Free Inspection and Repair
On October 8, 2026, CPSC announced a recall because the front lock nut can loosen and allow the front wheel to come loose, creating a crash risk. Its notice lists no reported incidents or injuries. REI is the retailer; Decathlon America is the importer.
Affected families are Sword Brown CN FR (8911304), Apex Beige CN FR (8911305), Sword Pink CN FR (8911308) and GRX Black (8929130), sold through REI March 2025–August 2026. Find the barcode label near the frame’s bottom bracket, then compare its exact Product ID with the CPSC Product ID/REI SKU table. A number starting with 5 alone does not establish eligibility.
REI offers free inspection and repair of the front fork assembly. If you cannot visit a store, contact Decathlon at support.america@decathlon.com or 415-408-5494, Monday–Friday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. Pacific.
This is a safety-recall repair process. Use it separately from the satisfaction-return guidance below; the notice does not promise an automatic refund. Before arranging a visit, photograph the label and ask the store what records to bring, whether an appointment is needed and how it will confirm completion. Keep the service record with your order documentation.
The official recall poster linked by REI says a completed recall repair is marked with a black ink dot on the frame’s product label. Ask the service team to verify the mark and document the work rather than treating an unidentified dot as proof.
Recall information checked October 11, 2026. This section does not recheck the September policy research elsewhere in this guide. See also REI product-safety notices and Decathlon’s recall page.
What to Include in Your REI Review
- Whether you bought online, in a store, from REI Outlet or in-store Re/Supply, and whether you were a member when you bought the item.
- Product, size or model, purchase date, price, and condition when returned.
- Shipping, pickup or return tracking and any warranty or repair instructions received.
- Support contacts, whether a return was accepted, and the refund or other resolution.
REI Membership and Co-op Member Reward
REI’s lifetime co-op membership currently costs $30 once, without annual dues. Membership provides access to member offers and an annual Co-op Member Reward on eligible purchases. REI describes the typical reward as 10% back on qualified full-price purchases, but this is not guaranteed and excludes many items, including REI Outlet merchandise, discounted and used gear, gift cards, classes, service charges and taxes. Check the reward rules and membership terms for the year of your purchase.
Membership is distinct from the optional REI Co-op Mastercard. Check the card’s separate terms and rewards before applying. If purchases or rewards do not appear in your account, confirm that your member number is linked to the correct online account through REI’s membership lookup.
Returns and Exchanges
REI’s current returns and exchanges guidance generally allows members up to one year from purchase for most eligible merchandise; nonmembers generally have 90 days. Outdoor electronics, such as GPS devices and watches, have a 90-day limit regardless of membership status. New e-bikes generally follow the ordinary member/nonmember window rather than the outdoor-electronics rule. A receipt, order confirmation or member-linked purchase record helps REI locate the transaction.
REI says gently used gear can qualify within the applicable time frame, but used items must be cleaned before return; excessively dirty items can be declined. Its satisfaction guarantee does not cover ordinary wear and tear, misuse or accidental damage. In-store Re/Supply used-gear purchases are sold as-is and final sale. Co-op memberships, gift cards, lift tickets and passes are also listed as final sale. Sale, clearance and REI Outlet goods generally can be returned under the usual eligibility rules; do not confuse Outlet with in-store Re/Supply. See REI’s return help center for product-specific exceptions.
For a store return, bring the receipt or barcode in the order email. REI also offers an online mail-return route with a shipping label or QR code for qualifying purchases. Its exchange guidance generally treats an exchange as a return followed by a new purchase; if a sale price matters, confirm the price with customer service first. A product manufacturer’s separate warranty is not the same as REI’s return period.
Returns Without a Receipt and Refund Timing
REI says a store purchase linked to an REI Co-op membership can generally be found using the member number. A store purchase that was not linked to membership requires a paper or emailed store receipt under its proof-of-purchase guidance. For online purchases, use the order details and confirmation email. Do not assume a no-receipt cash or store-credit option is available.
REI says a card refund from a store return can take about 5–7 business days to reach the account. A mailed return can take 2–3 weeks to process after REI receives it; bank posting can add time. Check refund status and retain the tracking number until the credit arrives. The original payment mix, gift cards and redeemed member rewards can affect how a refund is issued and the reward balance.
Online Orders, Shipping and Pickup
REI offers shipping speeds and free store pickup for eligible items, with availability and estimates shown at checkout. Shipping dates are estimates affected by inventory, destination, item size, carrier and weather. An order can arrive in separate packages. REI’s shipping FAQ says pickup orders are typically canceled if not collected by the pickup-by date, often about 14 days after the last item is ready; contact the store to ask about extending the deadline. Follow the actual ready email because store and curbside instructions vary by location.
If tracking shows delivered but the package is missing, or if an item is missing, incorrect or damaged, use REI’s delivery-issues form with the order and carrier information. Preserve packaging and photographs for damage. A late estimated delivery is distinct from a lost package, and REI’s form provides separate routes for both.
Cancellation and Price Adjustments
REI says an eligible online order may be canceled through the signed-in account within about 20 minutes of placement if a cancel link appears. Memberships, store-pickup items, orders containing certain combinations and e-gift-card-only orders are excluded from this online cancellation route. If no link is available, the order cannot be canceled through that tool. Contact REI promptly if you made a mistake, and check the current help center for available options.
REI says it does not price-match competitors. An eligible item bought from REI that later falls in price may qualify for a price adjustment within 14 days of purchase, if it is the same product, color and size. REI Outlet items are excluded from price adjustments. Coupon exclusions and member promotions have their own conditions; keep the original order and offer details.
Gift Cards and Account Safety
REI gift cards have separate terms and are generally nonrefundable and nonreplaceable if lost or stolen; cash redemption is limited to legal or stated exceptions. Keep gift-card details private. Use REI’s official account, help center, phone or store to resolve membership or order problems and avoid sharing login or payment credentials in a public review.

Frequently asked questions
REI FAQs
Is my Van Rysel GRVL AF bicycle affected?
Use the exact-ID table linked in the recall section. If the label is unreadable or the names differ, send a clear label photo privately to the recall support team and request confirmation.
Where can I get the recall repair?
Use the REI store route above, or ask Decathlon for assistance when a store visit is impractical. Confirm arrangements before transporting the bicycle.
How can I identify a completed repair?
The poster’s black-dot identification is described above. Retain written confirmation from the service team, including the bicycle’s Product ID and service date.
Do REI members get a one-year return window?
Members generally have up to one year for most eligible merchandise. Nonmembers generally have 90 days. Outdoor electronics are generally limited to 90 days for everyone, and final-sale categories remain excluded.
Can I return gently used gear?
Often yes, within the applicable return window, if it meets REI’s conditions and is cleaned before return. Ordinary wear, accidental damage and misuse are not covered by the satisfaction guarantee. Used gear bought through in-store Re/Supply is final sale.
Can I return something without a receipt?
REI can generally locate a store purchase linked to your membership number. A store purchase not linked to membership requires a store receipt, including an emailed receipt, under REI’s current proof-of-purchase instructions.
How much does REI membership cost?
REI currently lists a one-time $30 fee for lifetime membership, with no annual dues. The membership itself is final sale.
How long does a mailed refund take?
REI says it can take 2–3 weeks after it receives the return to process a mailed refund. Card refunds from in-store returns can take about 5–7 business days to reach the account.
Does REI match competitors’ prices?
No. REI’s price-adjustment process may apply when an eligible item bought from REI drops in price within 14 days of purchase; REI Outlet items are excluded.
Can I cancel an REI order?
Some eligible online orders can be canceled through the account within about 20 minutes if the cancel link appears. Memberships, pickup orders and certain gift-card orders do not qualify for that route.
