About Barnes & Noble
Barnes & Noble sells books, stationery, gifts, toys, NOOK devices and digital reading content through its stores and bn.com. Shoppers can buy online for delivery, choose an eligible store for pickup, or reserve certain items and pay in store. A review may depend on which channel you used and whether the purchase was a physical book, a digital product or a membership. Share your Barnes & Noble experience on ZeroStars using the −5 to +5 scale. A 0 rating is valid, and reviews can be positive, neutral or negative.
What to Include in Your Review
Identify the item, purchase date, store or online channel, expected delivery or pickup time and what happened. For a return, say whether the item was new and unopened, whether you had a receipt or order confirmation, how you paid, and whether you received a refund or store credit. For a membership concern, specify the tier, renewal date and benefit involved. Avoid posting order numbers, payment details, account passwords or gift card codes publicly.
Customer Service and Online Orders
Barnes & Noble directs customers to its help center for order tracking, returns, NOOK support, account issues and membership questions. The current contact page highlights 24-hour chat and an email request option. It describes phone support specifically for order placement, payment updates and privacy requests; the official phone-support page lists 1-800-843-2665 and daily hours of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern. For a store-specific problem, use the store locator to contact that location.
Check your order-status page and shipping confirmation if an item is delayed, missing or damaged. Keep the packaging, tracking record and photos of damage and contact customer service promptly. Barnes & Noble says there is only a brief window to cancel an online physical-item order while it moves through fulfillment; use the Cancel option in order history if it appears, and look for the confirmation email. A canceled item cannot be reinstated.
Online Returns and Refund Timing
The published policy generally accepts eligible bn.com items for a refund within 30 days after delivery, provided they remain in their original condition; sealed merchandise must be unopened. You can take an eligible purchase, proof of the online order and original payment method to a Barnes & Noble store, or ship it to the returns department using the packing-slip instructions. A printed shipping confirmation can substitute for a missing packing slip. The provided return label is an address label, not prepaid postage; return shipping is generally the customer’s expense and original shipping charges are not refunded.
Barnes & Noble says eligible refunds go to the original payment method and are processed within 24 hours after a refund is requested, but a card issuer may take several business days to show the credit. There are exceptions: its current online-return instructions say an in-store return of an order paid through Shop Pay receives store credit, and textbook returns receive store credit. Keep the return receipt or shipping tracking until the refund is visible.
Store Purchases, Receipts and Gift Returns
Eligible new, unread or unopened goods bought in a Barnes & Noble store generally have a 30-day window from purchase for an in-store return with the store sales receipt. The purchase can be returned to a different Barnes & Noble store. The policy says a return or exchange without a receipt is not permitted. An eligible refund usually follows the original payment method; if that payment method is unavailable, the store may issue electronic gift-card credit instead.
Gift receipts have separate timing: eligible store gift-receipt returns can receive gift-card credit within 60 days of purchase. An eligible gifted online item may also receive a Barnes & Noble gift card within 60 days. Promotional bundles such as buy-one-get-one offers have special exchange or full-set return rules, so keep all components and check the transaction terms.
NOOK, eBooks and Other Return Exceptions
An undamaged NOOK purchased on bn.com generally has a 14-day return window from receipt; it can be returned to a store or sent by the authorized route after contacting support. A NOOK bought in a Barnes & Noble store must be returned to a store. A device purchased from a different seller is subject to that seller’s return policy. A defective NOOK may qualify for an exchange under the applicable warranty, which is separate from a standard change-of-mind return.
Barnes & Noble lists used books, magazines, newspapers, gift cards and digital products such as eBooks, audiobooks and access codes as generally nonreturnable. Opened sealed goods are generally ineligible unless defective and exchanged for the same product. Bulk purchases of 50 or more copies are also listed as nonreturnable. Contact NOOK support if a digital item has a technical or compatibility problem.
Store Pickup and Reservations
For a paid buy-online, pick-up-in-store order, wait for the “Ready for Pick Up” notification before visiting and bring the notice and photo ID. Barnes & Noble says it holds these orders for five days; an uncollected order is canceled without billing the payment method used at checkout. Its pickup guidance says these placed orders cannot be canceled by the shopper or store, although an eligible picked-up item follows the online-purchase return policy.
“Reserve Online, Pay in Store” is a separate option: payment is due when the item is collected, and the store generally holds a confirmed reservation for three days. The in-store price can differ from the online price. Verify which checkout option you chose before reporting a missing order or unexpected charge.
Membership, Shipping, Promotions and Price Matching
Barnes & Noble currently offers a free Rewards Membership with stamps on qualifying purchases and a paid Premium Membership listed at $39.99 a year. Premium includes eligible member discounts and shipping benefits, subject to exclusions; Rewards has its own free-shipping threshold for eligible purchases. Check the current terms before joining, and review auto-renewal in your account if you no longer want paid membership. Rewards, coupons and benefits do not apply to every item or fee.
Barnes & Noble says it does not match competitors’ prices on individual products and cannot adjust the price of an order already placed. Online and store prices can also differ. Compare the final price, tax, shipping and any member benefit at checkout.
