Overview
Amtrak reviews and complaints require different processes for ticket cancellation, disruption assistance, service feedback and lost belongings. If departure is approaching, handle the ticket through Amtrak’s website, app or telephone service first. A written complaint does not change or cancel a reservation.
This guide covers the passenger rail operator at Amtrak.com. The editorial guidance below uses official policies and attributed passenger accounts. Reviews submitted directly to ZeroStars are displayed separately from this editorial guide.
Amtrak: Choose the Right Next Step
| Your situation | What to do first |
|---|---|
| You want to cancel before departure | Check the fare and use the website, app or 1-800-USA-RAIL; preserve the cancellation confirmation. |
| Amtrak canceled or significantly delayed travel | Ask about re-accommodation and the remedy for the affected segment; do not treat a delay as an automatic full refund. |
| You want to complain about a completed trip | Use the official feedback form with train, route, date and requested outcome. |
Policy check: Refund and service-commitment guidance rechecked October 9, 2026. Fare-specific rules and third-party bookings still need to be matched to the passenger’s receipt. See the refund policy, service commitments and feedback form.

- Cancellation and notifications: Daniel Belcher, September 27, 2026, reported a canceled departure followed by further delays and inadequate notice.
- Onboard service and cleanliness: Peyton Alexander, September 24, 2026, criticized employee interactions, garbage handling and bathroom conditions during a business-class trip.
- A mixed experience: Gilley Boaz, September 18, 2026, reported delays and a canceled Oakland–Los Angeles train, but praised roomette travel, views and the freedom to move around.
- A favorable trip: Sheila Fontana, September 21, 2026, praised the station experience, clean car, spacious seating and scenery on a trip to Saratoga Springs.

How to File an Amtrak Complaint
A useful complaint connects a specific problem to a specific trip. Before contacting support, gather:
- The travel date, route, train number, departure and arrival stations, and class of service.
- Your reservation number, ticket receipt and fare type, shared privately with Amtrak.
- A short timeline showing scheduled and actual times, cancellation notices, or the onboard issue.
- Relevant screenshots, photographs and receipts, plus any existing case number.
- The outcome you are requesting, such as an explanation, a refund review, a baggage claim or a service response.
Explain what happened, what staff told you and what remains unresolved. If you have already received a reply, refer to that case rather than starting the story again. Ask whether Customer Relations can review the issue and request a written explanation of the decision.
Keep reservation details and payment information out of a public review. On ZeroStars, describe the experience in your own words and include whether Amtrak resolved it. Update your review if the outcome changes.
For ordinary service and refund concerns, use Amtrak customer service. The Amtrak Office of Inspector General expressly directs complaints about delays, cleanliness, employee demeanor and refund requests to customer service; its hotline addresses fraud, waste, abuse and related misconduct.
Train Delays, Cancellations and Missed Connections
During a disruption, ask staff which rebooking or connection options are available before arranging replacement travel. Save the notices you receive and record the actual arrival time. If you pay additional expenses, keep itemized receipts and ask whether those expenses qualify for reimbursement.
Amtrak says Customer Relations monitors significant delays and may offer Guest Rewards points, a Transportation Voucher and/or a refund for the affected segment. Rebooking efforts and overnight assistance also carry conditions. A late train does not, by itself, establish an automatic full-trip refund or reimbursement for every extra expense.
When following up, identify the affected segment and the practical impact: a missed connection, an unavailable accommodation or a substantially changed journey. Ask which remedy applies to your circumstances and whether the proposed resolution addresses the specific loss you reported.
Amtrak Ticket Cancellation and Refund Rules
For voluntary cancellations, Amtrak’s published refund policy distinguishes fare types. Reserved tickets bought directly with cash or a credit/debit card qualify for a full refund when canceled within 24 hours of purchase and before scheduled departure. Unreserved services have a one-hour purchase window.
Outside that initial window, the following rules apply to Coach, Acela Business and Acela First fares canceled before departure:
| Fare | Refund | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| Flex | Full refund to the original payment method, with no cancellation fee. | No change fee; a fare difference may apply. |
| Value | 70% refunded; 30% forfeited. | Not permitted. |
| Sale | 50% refunded; 50% forfeited. | Not permitted. |
Private rooms, non-Acela Business, reward bookings, passes, gift-card payments and BidUp upgrades have additional or different rules. Third-party bookings require checking the seller’s terms. A no-show segment can lose its entire value. Most online purchases can be canceled through Amtrak’s website or app; telephone and staffed ticket-office options also exist.
Check the fare shown on your receipt before estimating a refund. If Amtrak changed or canceled the service, explain that circumstance to the agent rather than assuming the voluntary-cancellation table settles your request.
Baggage Problems and Lost Property
Amtrak’s checked-baggage guidance says to report damaged baggage or lost items at baggage claim before leaving a staffed arrival station. It also allows a claim through Customer Relations within 30 days of the trip. Retain baggage tags, photographs and the claim reference.
For an item left on a train or at a station, follow Amtrak’s lost-item reporting instructions, which link to its online report. Provide travel dates, stations, train numbers and a detailed description of the item. The process supplies a Lost Item ID for tracking; filing a report does not guarantee recovery.

Frequently asked questions
Amtrak FAQs
Where is the official Amtrak complaint form?
Use Amtrak’s E-mail Us form. Select the appropriate subject and mark the nature of your comment as a complaint when applicable. Include the train, travel date, stations and requested outcome. The page states a 7–10-day response window and cannot change or cancel tickets. Keep your submitted message and any case reference.
What is the phone number for Amtrak complaints?
Call 1-800-872-7245 (1-800-USA-RAIL). Have your trip details ready and ask about Customer Relations review if the issue remains unresolved. The number appears in Amtrak’s official service commitments.
Can I cancel a ticket through Amtrak’s complaint form?
No. Amtrak’s email form explicitly says it cannot change or cancel tickets. Use the website, app or a ticket-service agent, and address any cancellation deadline separately from the complaint.
How do I report something left on an Amtrak train?
Use the online report linked from Amtrak’s Reporting Lost Items page. Describe the item and journey carefully, then keep the Lost Item ID. For checked-baggage damage or loss, follow the baggage-claim process instead.
Can I leave a positive or neutral Amtrak review on ZeroStars?
Yes. ZeroStars welcomes positive, neutral and negative first-hand experiences. Zero is a valid neutral rating on the −5 to +5 scale. Describe the route, service and outcome without posting private reservation or payment details.
