Overview

American Express reviews and complaints can help other consumers understand experiences involving Amex credit cards, charge cards, Rewards Checking, savings accounts, payments, disputes, fraud claims, merchant services and customer support. Share what happened, which product or service you used, the steps you took to resolve the issue and whether American Express provided a satisfactory outcome. Positive, neutral and negative experiences are welcome on ZeroStars’ −5 to +5 rating scale.

American Express operates card, banking and merchant-service products with different support channels. Contact details, eligibility, fees, benefits, dispute rights and account features can vary by product, account agreement and customer status, so use the number or support route tied to your specific account when possible.

What to Include in Your American Express Review
  • Product: credit card, charge card, Rewards Checking, savings, CD, merchant account or other Amex service.
  • Issue: declined transaction, account hold, dispute, fraud claim, payment posting, fee, rewards problem, account closure, deposit issue or customer-service problem.
  • Timeline: approximate dates, number of calls or chats and how long the issue remained unresolved.
  • Support route: phone, secure chat, app, online dispute center or merchant portal.
  • Resolution: what Amex said or did and whether funds, points, account access or disputed charges were restored.

Do not post your full card number, checking or savings account number, Social Security number, login credentials, one-time security codes, dispute documents containing personal data or other sensitive financial information.

Account Access and Holds

American Express may use identity verification, fraud controls and account-specific reviews when unusual activity is detected. If your account is restricted or a transaction is declined, document the exact message, date, amount and support case or chat reference. Ask whether the issue affects only a transaction, a specific Card, online access or the broader account relationship.

For Rewards Checking or savings, keep copies of deposit confirmations, transfer records and any notices describing restrictions or verification requests. Availability, holds and account features are governed by the applicable deposit agreement and product terms.

Fraud and Unauthorized Transactions

American Express directs U.S. Card Members who suspect fraud to 1-800-528-4800 or secure online chat. Amex also recommends promptly updating contact information, enabling account notifications and using multi-factor verification.

For Rewards Checking debit-card errors, unauthorized transactions, or a lost or stolen debit card, Amex lists 1-877-221-2639. Amex states that its debit-card Zero Liability protection applies to qualifying unauthorized charges reported promptly, subject to the account agreement and limitations.

If you report fraud, note when you first discovered the transaction, whether the Card or device remained in your possession, when you contacted Amex, and any provisional or final credit information you received.

Credit and Charge Card Problems

Card complaints may involve transaction declines, payment posting, interest or fee questions, rewards, account limits, replacement cards, account reviews or closures. Product terms differ across American Express Cards, and some cards have annual fees, spending limits or benefits that depend on the specific product and account status.

If your physical Card is lost or stolen, American Express allows eligible Card Members to request a replacement online. Amex states that replacement delivery options can include free next-day shipping, depending on circumstances and eligibility.

Disputes and Chargebacks

American Express Card Members can review and manage disputes online after signing in. For a billing dispute, keep the merchant name, amount, transaction date, purchase documentation, cancellation or return records and any correspondence with the merchant.

Merchants have a separate dispute process through the American Express merchant portal. Amex lists Merchant Customer Care at 1-800-528-5200, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Eastern, and provides online dispute tools for responding to inquiries and chargebacks.

Payments and Transfers

For Card accounts, payment-processing issues can include scheduled payments, returned payments, bank-account verification and payment timing. For Rewards Checking and savings, transfer availability and processing can depend on the type of transfer, account status and receiving institution.

Before escalating a missing or delayed transfer, keep the confirmation number, amount, initiation date, expected arrival date and the source and destination account types. Avoid publicly posting routing numbers or full account numbers.

Fees and Account Closures

American Express fees vary by product. Credit and charge cards may have annual fees, foreign transaction fees or other charges depending on the Card. Deposit accounts and merchant services have separate schedules and agreements.

If your complaint involves a fee or closure, identify the product, fee type or closure notice, the date it appeared and the explanation provided by Amex. If a closure affects rewards, credits, deposits or pending disputes, document any deadline or redemption information you receive.

Mobile App and Online Account Support

The American Express website and Amex App support account access, transaction review, Card management, secure chat, alerts and other features depending on the product. Rewards Checking customers can also use online or app chat for support.

For a digital-access problem, note whether the issue occurs on the app, website or both, the approximate time, device type and any error message. Never share one-time passcodes or authentication codes with anyone claiming to be support.

Savings, CDs and Rewards Checking

American Express National Bank offers deposit products including High Yield Savings, CDs and Rewards Checking, subject to eligibility and product terms. Savings customer service is listed at 1-800-446-6307 with general representatives available 24/7; specialty teams handling certain monetary inquiries, restrictions and maintenance may have narrower weekday hours.

Rewards Checking support is listed at 1-877-221-2639. If your issue involves a debit card, deposit, transfer, account restriction or unauthorized transaction, identify that it concerns Rewards Checking so it is routed to the correct team.

Merchant Services

Businesses that accept American Express have separate merchant support channels from consumer Card Members. Merchant complaints may involve settlements, disputes, chargebacks, account access, acceptance terms or payment-processing support. American Express lists Merchant Customer Care at 1-800-528-5200 on weekdays.
