About DIRECTV

Overview
DIRECTV reviews and complaints can help other customers understand a satellite TV, streaming TV, billing, equipment, programming or customer-service experience. Share what happened, which version of DIRECTV you use and whether the company resolved the issue. Positive, neutral and negative experiences are welcome on ZeroStars’ −5 to +5 rating scale.
DIRECTV now operates as a standalone video company and is wholly owned by TPG Capital. Current consumer service is available through traditional satellite service and internet-based streaming plans. DIRECTV also offers Genre Packs, Signature streaming packages and MyFree DIRECTV. Service terms, equipment and cancellation rules differ depending on whether the account uses satellite or internet delivery.
What to Include in Your DIRECTV Review
A useful DIRECTV review explains your own experience in enough detail for another customer to understand it:
- Service type: satellite, DIRECTV via Internet, a streaming package, Genre Pack or another DIRECTV product.
- What happened: the approximate date, billing issue, missing channel, technical problem, installation issue, equipment failure, contract dispute, cancellation or return.
- Support route: phone, chat, online account or technician visit.
- Outcome: what DIRECTV promised and whether the bill correction, channel restoration, replacement, credit, refund or cancellation was completed.
Choose the rating that reflects your experience. A rating of 0 is valid. Do not publish account numbers, passwords, payment details, security codes or unredacted bills in a public review.
DIRECTV Satellite vs. DIRECTV via Internet
DIRECTV currently supports both satellite-based television and internet-delivered service. Satellite customers use an installed dish and receiver equipment, while internet customers stream DIRECTV through compatible devices and can also use DIRECTV-provided Gemini hardware.
The distinction matters because contracts, equipment, moving, cancellation and return rules can differ. A review should identify which version of DIRECTV the customer actually has.
Streaming Packages and Genre Packs
DIRECTV currently sells traditional streaming packages plus smaller Genre Packs built around sports, entertainment, news, kids and Spanish-language programming. Current streaming offers are advertised without annual contracts and can be canceled at any time.
Genre Packs can also include selected third-party streaming apps or mini-pack add-ons. If your review concerns a channel or bundle, identify the exact package because channel lineups and included apps vary.
Satellite Programming Commitments
DIRECTV satellite accounts can still include 12- or 24-month programming commitments in exchange for equipment, installation or promotional discounts. DIRECTV’s current support materials say new satellite customers can have a 24-month commitment, and existing customers can enter a new 12- or 24-month commitment when upgrading equipment, moving or accepting certain promotions.
If your complaint concerns a contract, check the specific commitment end date shown in the account rather than assuming every DIRECTV customer has the same term.
Early Termination Fees
DIRECTV’s current support guidance says customers who cancel before the end of an applicable programming commitment can be charged an early termination fee of up to $20 for each month remaining.
This does not apply to all current DIRECTV products. Current internet-based streaming packages are advertised as no-contract services. Satellite and certain promotional arrangements can be different.
Billing and Unexpected Charges
DIRECTV bills can include the base package, premium channels, sports packages, regional sports fees where applicable, equipment or device fees, taxes and one-time charges. Customers who previously received a combined AT&T and DIRECTV bill can now receive separate bills from each company.
If a charge is unclear, compare the latest statement with the prior bill, promotional terms and any recent channel, device or package changes. Ask support to identify the exact line item and whether it is recurring or one-time.
Price Changes and Promotional Rates
DIRECTV package prices and promotional discounts can change over time. Streaming offers often renew at the then-current rate after free trials or promotional periods, while satellite accounts can have a different promotional structure.
If your review concerns a price increase, include the previous amount, new amount, effective date and any notice or promotion expiration shown on the account.
Channel Lineups and Missing Programming
DIRECTV channel availability varies by package, location and service type. Local broadcast stations, regional sports networks and certain specialty channels can differ by ZIP code and package.
Programming disputes can also temporarily remove a channel. If your review concerns missing programming, identify the channel, your package, your market and whether DIRECTV explained that the issue involved your package, a blackout, a local-market restriction or a carriage dispute.
Sports and Regional Sports Networks
Sports availability depends heavily on package and market. DIRECTV currently markets sports-focused packages and Genre Packs, including MySports, while some regional sports networks are available only in specific locations or qualifying packages.
If your complaint concerns a sports channel, game blackout or regional network, include the sport, channel, ZIP code or market and exact package involved.
Gemini and Gemini Air Devices
DIRECTV uses Gemini and Gemini Air devices for its internet-connected viewing experience. Depending on the offer, equipment can be leased or otherwise provided as part of the subscription.
If your review concerns a Gemini device, identify whether the problem involves setup, remote pairing, Wi-Fi, apps, voice control, picture quality, replacement or return requirements.
Equipment Returns After Cancellation
DIRECTV says some customers must return leased equipment after cancellation to avoid a non-return fee. The account and cancellation process determines exactly which devices must be returned.
DIRECTV currently provides prepaid return instructions using UPS, FedEx or U.S. Mail. For many leased-device returns, customers return the box or receiver, power cord and remote. Satellite dishes, outside hardware, HDMI cables, coaxial cables, splitters and switches generally are not returned.
Satellite Dish and Outside Equipment
DIRECTV’s current cancellation guidance says the satellite dish and other outside equipment are generally left at the property and are not part of the equipment-return process.
If a dish must be removed for property or landlord reasons, that is separate from the normal receiver-return process. Do not ship outdoor dish hardware unless DIRECTV specifically instructs you to do so.
Equipment Non-Return Fees
DIRECTV can charge a non-return fee when leased equipment that must be returned is not received. The fee depends on the equipment type and can apply per device.
Keep the return receipt and tracking information until the equipment has been cleared from the account. If a non-return fee appears after equipment was shipped, provide the tracking information to support.
Cancellation and Account Closure
DIRECTV’s current cancellation page lists 1-800-531-5000 for personalized cancellation. Customers with internet-delivered service can also sign in and select Cancel service when that option is available.
DIRECTV says service that is paid in advance generally continues through the end of the billing cycle, and partial-cycle refunds or credits are generally not provided unless required by law. Before canceling, confirm the effective date, any remaining commitment, equipment return requirements and whether add-ons or streaming services will also end.
Pausing or Suspending Service
DIRECTV provides pause or suspension options in certain situations. Satellite customers are directed to call customer service, while internet-delivered customers can have self-service pause options in the account.
Pausing can be useful for temporary situations, but customers with a satellite programming commitment should note that DIRECTV says the commitment period can also pause while service is suspended.
Moving DIRECTV Service
Satellite customers can use DIRECTV’s moving-service process when relocating. Internet-delivered customers can generally move without a dish installation, but location-dependent channels and regional sports networks can change.
If your review concerns a move, note whether the account remained satellite-based or switched to internet delivery and whether a new commitment or equipment arrangement was added.
Refunds and Final Billing
DIRECTV says cancellation timing and final charges depend on the service type, equipment and any active commitment. Customers who pay in advance can usually continue watching through the end of the billing cycle.
If DIRECTV agrees to a refund or credit, ask for the amount, where it will appear and when it should post. A service credit, equipment-fee reversal and cash or card refund are different outcomes.
AT&T Billing Separation
DIRECTV and AT&T are now separate companies, and DIRECTV has been separating remaining combined AT&T/DIRECTV bills. Customers affected by this transition receive a DIRECTV bill and an AT&T bill separately.
DIRECTV says the separation itself does not change the customer’s DIRECTV service, discounts, credits or service terms. If a review concerns a duplicate-looking bill, verify whether it is actually the new separate DIRECTV statement.
Ownership and Company Status
DIRECTV is now a wholly owned portfolio company of TPG Capital. AT&T is no longer the owner of DIRECTV.
DIRECTV announced a proposed acquisition of DISH in 2024, but that transaction did not close. DIRECTV and DISH remain separate consumer brands, so complaints about DISH should be directed to a separate DISH review page rather than combined with DIRECTV.
Account Security and Fraud
DIRECTV maintains a separate process for identity-theft claims and warns customers about common scams. Customers who believe an account was opened fraudulently may be asked to submit identity documents and a police report through DIRECTV’s official fraud process.
Do not provide account credentials or payment information to an unsolicited caller or message. When in doubt, contact DIRECTV through the official website or known support number.
