FPL Reviews and Complaints About Bills, Outages and Customer Service
FPL reviews and complaints often focus on electric bills, deposits, payment processing, power outages, restoration estimates, account changes, field work and difficulty reaching the correct customer-service department. Other customers describe quick outage restoration, professional crews or helpful individual representatives.
Florida Power & Light Company is an electric utility and a subsidiary of NextEra Energy. FPL describes itself as America’s largest electric utility, serving more than 6 million customer accounts and approximately 12 million people across Florida.
Because electricity is an essential service, an FPL complaint can involve more than ordinary dissatisfaction. A customer may be facing a payment deadline, disconnection notice, prolonged outage, dangerous power line, property damage or medical need. This guide explains the available support routes, recurring review themes and practical steps consumers can take while protecting important deadlines.

FPL Review Summary
Positive FPL reviews sometimes mention timely power restoration, professional field crews, helpful individual representatives and convenient online account or outage tools. Negative reviews commonly allege unexpected bills, high deposits, payment-processing problems, difficulty reaching a live representative, repeated outages, delayed service work or unsatisfactory complaint resolution.
- Potential Strengths: Large Florida service network, online outage reporting, Power Tracker outage map, multiple payment methods, energy-use tools and several assistance programs
- Potential Concerns: Billing amounts, account deposits, payment processing, access to a knowledgeable representative, restoration estimates, field-service appointments and property-damage claims
- Zero Stars Rating Status: No reviews had been published when this listing was created. A displayed 0 therefore represents no rating history, not a neutral customer rating.

FPL, FPL Northwest and FPL Home Are Different Support Routes
FPL’s website separates its main FPL service region from FPL Northwest Florida. Northwest customers should use the number and account resources provided for that region. When checked in September 2026, the Northwest support number was 1-888-326-4853, with hours Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
FPL Home is also not the same support route as regulated electric service. FPL states that FPL Home is an unregulated subsidiary and that certain surge-protection programs are offered or administered by FPL Home rather than Florida Power & Light Company.
Before filing a complaint, check the name on the bill, agreement, service order or protection-plan documents. A regulated electric-service complaint, an FPL Home product complaint and a dispute with a private contractor may require different departments and outside agencies.
Public FPL Review Snapshot
When this article was prepared in September 2026, the new Zero Stars FPL listing had no published customer reviews. A 0 displayed from 0 reviews means that no rating history had been established. It does not mean customers collectively gave FPL a neutral score.
The FPL Trustpilot profile displayed a score of 1.3 out of 5 from 177 reviews. Trustpilot showed 92% of those reviews at one star. Trustpilot also stated that the profile had no history of asking customers for reviews and warned that the sample might not be representative.
The Better Business Bureau profile for FPL showed that the company was BBB Accredited and had an A+ BBB rating when checked.
These results should not be averaged or treated as measurements of the same thing. Trustpilot displays voluntary customer-review scores, while a BBB letter grade evaluates different business and complaint-handling factors. Each platform has its own audience, collection methods and moderation procedures.
Customer reviews are opinions and allegations from their authors. They do not prove that FPL made an error in every case, that every customer had the same experience or that a particular employee, contractor or company policy caused the reported problem.
What Customers Say They Like About FPL
Timely Restoration in Some Cases
Some positive reviewers describe power being restored within a relatively short period and praise the professionalism of the responding crew. Restoration time can vary considerably depending on the cause, the number of customers affected, weather, access, equipment damage and whether repairs require specialized crews.
Helpful Individual Representatives
Some customers report that an individual representative listened carefully, explained an account issue or helped route the problem to the correct department. These experiences may reflect a particular employee or case rather than every interaction with FPL.
Online Outage and Account Tools
FPL provides online outage reporting, the Power Tracker map, account-management tools, payment options and energy-use information. Customers who can complete their task online may find these tools more convenient than waiting for telephone support.
Multiple Payment and Assistance Options
Customers can choose among online bank payments, automatic payments, telephone payments, credit or debit card options, bank bill-pay services, authorized walk-in locations and payment by mail. FPL also publishes information about payment extensions, income-based assistance and programs intended to help customers manage future bills.
Common FPL Complaints
The following themes appeared repeatedly in public FPL reviews examined for this article. They summarize what customers allege and should not be interpreted as findings that every complaint is accurate or that FPL was responsible in each case.
High or Unexpected Electric Bills
Some reviewers say their bills increased more than they expected and question whether the change resulted from higher usage, current rates, a longer billing period, an account adjustment or another charge. A larger dollar amount does not always mean the meter recorded an error; Florida cooling demand, household changes and rate adjustments can also affect the total.
Customers can make a complaint more useful by comparing kilowatt-hour usage, billing days and specific line items instead of reporting only that the dollar amount increased.
Account Deposits
Deposit complaints frequently involve the amount required to start or maintain service, an additional deposit following late payments, the timing of a deposit refund or how a deposit was applied when an account closed.
Ask FPL to explain the calculation, the account history used, the conditions for refund or adjustment and whether any remaining deposit will be credited to a final bill or returned separately.
Difficulty Reaching a Live Representative
Numerous public reviewers describe difficulty moving beyond automated telephone or online support. Others say they were transferred repeatedly or could not reach a representative with authority to address a specialized billing, payment, construction or field-service issue.
When contact is successful, save the date, department, representative’s name or identification, case number and promised next step. A detailed record makes later escalation easier.
Payment Processing and Automatic Payments
Some customers report that a payment was delayed, returned, applied incorrectly or not withdrawn when expected. Others say they believed Automatic Bill Pay was active but later discovered that a payment had not processed.
Enrollment in automatic payments should not be treated as proof that the next bill was paid. Check the effective date, verify the withdrawal and retain the payment confirmation. When disputing a returned-payment or late charge, obtain records from both FPL and the financial institution.
Power Outages and Restoration Estimates
Outage complaints often concern repeated interruptions, an estimate that changed, limited information about the cause or a longer restoration period than the customer expected. Restoration estimates may change as crews inspect equipment and determine the extent of damage.
Record the time the outage began, when it was reported, any status messages and when service returned. Report a dangerous condition through FPL’s emergency route rather than relying on a review or social-media post.
Service Orders, Appointments and Construction Work
Some complaints involve delayed start-of-service requests, meter work, new construction, pole relocation, missed appointments or difficulty communicating with a planner or field department.
For a project-related complaint, retain the service-order number, required deposits or advance payments, scheduled dates, plans, permits, contractor communications and any written statement describing which work belongs to FPL and which work belongs to the customer or electrician.
Tree Trimming, Contractors and Property Concerns
Customers sometimes report dissatisfaction with vegetation work, access to private property, contractor conduct, damaged landscaping, sidewalks or other property. Photograph the area before and after scheduled work when practical, identify the company shown on the vehicle or paperwork and report the issue promptly.
Do not attempt to trim or remove vegetation near energized lines. Use FPL’s official vegetation and power-concern routes and follow its power-line safety guidance.
Equipment Damage and Claim Decisions
Some reviewers attribute appliance or electrical-equipment damage to voltage fluctuations, an outage or utility work. Establishing the cause may require records, an electrician’s findings, equipment information and FPL’s investigation.
A customer review is not a claim. Use FPL’s formal claim procedure when seeking reimbursement or repair.
What To Check When an FPL Bill Is Higher Than Expected
FPL states that a monthly bill is determined by the amount of electricity used and by rates approved by the Florida Public Service Commission. The company’s rates and bill information provides current explanations and energy-saving resources.
- Compare kilowatt-hour usage. Compare the current kWh total with the previous month and the same season in an earlier year.
- Check the number of billing days. A longer billing period can increase the total even when average daily use is similar.
- Review every line item. Look for a past-due balance, deposit, returned-payment charge, late fee, optional program, adjustment or prior balance.
- Compare average daily usage. Dividing total kWh by billing days may provide a clearer comparison than the monthly total alone.
- Consider weather and occupancy changes. Extended air-conditioning use, guests, working from home or a vacant home returning to normal use can affect consumption.
- Check major electrical loads. Air-conditioning systems, pool pumps, electric water heaters, dehumidifiers, space heaters and malfunctioning appliances can use substantial electricity.
- Account for new equipment. Electric vehicles, additional refrigerators, pumps, workshops or other new loads can change the household’s usage pattern.
- Review Budget Billing separately. The amount due under Budget Billing may differ from the actual electric charges for the month.
- Verify the service details. Confirm the address, service dates, account changes and any meter work shown in the account history.
- Request a specific explanation. Ask FPL to identify which usage, rate or account component produced the increase and request a case number for the review.
How FPL Budget Billing Works
FPL’s Budget Billing program uses up to 12 months of recent energy use to calculate a rolling average. The newest month is added and the oldest month is removed, so the Budget Billing amount can change over time.
Budget Billing is intended to reduce seasonal swings, but it is not a discount or energy-savings program. Customers still pay for the electricity used over time. The difference between actual electric charges and the Budget Billing amount is tracked as a deferred balance.
Before enrolling or leaving the program, review:
- The actual electric charges for the current month
- The Budget Billing amount currently due
- The accumulated deferred balance
- How that balance will be settled if the program or account ends
- Whether moving within or outside the service area changes the treatment of the balance
FPL Payments, Extensions, Deposits and Assistance
FPL Payment Options
FPL’s official payment page lists several methods, including online bank-account payments, Automatic Bill Pay, the FPL mobile app, credit or debit card payments through Speedpay, payments through a bank, telephone payments, Guest Pay, authorized walk-in locations and payment by mail.
Some card-based options may include a convenience fee. Read the payment screen before submitting the transaction, verify the account number and save the confirmation. Avoid sending payment through a link or telephone number received in an unexpected message unless it matches an official FPL source.
FPL Payment Extensions
FPL’s payment-extension page says eligibility may depend on payment history, length of time as a customer, the amount and age of the past-due balance and the timeliness of prior payments.
When checked in September 2026, FPL stated that an approved extension does not prevent the payment from being considered late. The company said a late charge could be the greater of $5 or 1.5% of the total past-due balance.
FPL also stated that being late twice within six months can initiate a deposit review. If there is a gap of $50 or more between the deposit held and two months of average billing, FPL may request an additional deposit. These terms can change, so review the current extension page before accepting an arrangement.
If payment is not received by the extension date, the arrangement may default and service may be disconnected. Keep the confirmation showing the approved date and amount.
Bill Assistance and Account-Support Programs
FPL’s assistance page lists programs that may include:
- Temporary payment extensions
- Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, commonly called LIHEAP
- FPL Care To Share
- FPL Saving Steps
- Income-qualified energy-saving upgrades
- Bill Extender for qualifying fixed-income customers
- Friendly Reminder notifications
- Medically Essential Service notices and referrals
Program funding, qualifications, benefits and availability may change. Apply through an official FPL or government channel and keep copies of the application, supporting documents and decision.
FPL Outages, Restoration and Electrical Safety
Use FPL’s official outage-reporting page or call 1-800-468-8243 to report an outage. Customers can check restoration information through the FPL Power Tracker.
When documenting an outage complaint, record:
- The date and approximate time service was interrupted
- Whether the entire property or only part of it lost power
- Whether nearby properties were also affected
- The time the outage was reported
- Any report or confirmation number
- Restoration estimates and changes to those estimates
- The time full service returned
- Any visible damage, unusual sounds, flickering or partial-power symptoms
A restoration estimate is not necessarily a guarantee. The estimated time may change after crews inspect the problem, locate damaged equipment, obtain replacement materials or determine that additional work is required.
Downed Lines, Damaged Poles and Dangerous Conditions
FPL instructs customers to call 1-800-468-8243 immediately for a dangerous condition such as a downed power line. Call 911 for a life-threatening emergency.
Do not approach a downed line, touch anything in contact with it or assume that it is de-energized. Keep people and pets away and wait for emergency or utility personnel.
Tree and Vegetation Concerns
FPL provides separate routes for trees near power lines, damaged poles, streetlights, power-quality concerns and underground-service questions through its power-related concerns page.
Do not personally trim branches near power lines. FPL warns customers to stay far away from power lines and to account for ladders, tools, pruning equipment and other objects that could make electrical contact.
FPL Claims for Food Loss, Equipment or Property Damage
FPL publishes a claims policy and claim-submission route. The claims hotline is 1-888-443-7717.
FPL states that it evaluates how an incident happened, whether FPL caused it, the extent of the damage and what compensation may be appropriate under the applicable rules and law. An investigation may include records, witness or employee interviews and a technical evaluation.
Useful supporting records may include:
- Photographs of the damaged property or equipment
- Repair estimates, invoices or purchase records
- Equipment model number, serial number and approximate year
- Receipts for reasonable expenses
- An electrician’s or technician’s written findings
- Outage reports, service-order numbers and claim numbers
- Emails, letters and notes from telephone conversations
FPL says it may use depreciation when determining compensation for equipment loss. Its published policy also identifies circumstances for which it generally denies responsibility, including hurricanes and other weather-related events, negligence by an unrelated third party and animal contacts.
A claim involving an FPL Home surge-protection product may require the separate FPL Home claim route rather than the regulated utility claim process. Confirm which company issued the agreement before filing.
FPL Solar and Net-Metering Concerns
FPL’s net-metering information says customers must apply before installing or connecting a customer-owned generation system such as rooftop solar. The process includes an interconnection application and a meter capable of measuring excess electricity supplied to the grid.
If a solar-related problem occurs, first determine which party controls the disputed step:
- FPL: Interconnection application, utility meter, electric account and qualifying bill credits
- Solar Installer: System design, permits, installation, inspections, equipment and workmanship
- Financing Company: Loan, lease, payment schedule, lien or financing disclosures
- Local Authority: Building permit and inspection requirements
Keep the sales agreement, financing agreement, permit record, interconnection application, inspection approval, meter date, permission-to-operate notice, production records and FPL bills. Do not assume FPL is responsible for a promise made by an independent solar salesperson or financing company.
How To Escalate an FPL Complaint
- Use the emergency route when necessary. Report outages and dangerous conditions immediately rather than beginning with an ordinary billing complaint.
- Contact the correct department. Distinguish among billing, payments, start or stop service, outage reporting, construction, vegetation, claims, FPL Northwest and FPL Home.
- Gather the records. Save bills, payment confirmations, usage history, notices, photographs, service orders and prior communications.
- Open a formal case. Ask for a case, ticket, service-order or claim number and record the date it was created.
- State the requested resolution. Explain whether you are seeking a bill explanation, corrected payment, deposit review, service appointment, outage investigation, property repair or claim decision.
- Request supervisor review. Ask for escalation when the first representative cannot explain or resolve the issue.
- Request the result in writing. A written explanation is especially useful for disputed usage, deposits, claim denials or regulatory complaints.
- Use the formal claim route for damage. Do not rely solely on an ordinary customer-service complaint when reimbursement is requested.
- Contact the Florida Public Service Commission when appropriate. Regulated electric-service complaints may be submitted to the state utility regulator after the customer has documented the issue and attempted to work with FPL.

Frequently Asked Questions About FPL
What is the main FPL customer-service number?
FPL’s official contact page lists 1-888-988-8249. When checked in September 2026, published hours were Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
What number reports an FPL power outage?
Call 1-800-468-8243 or use FPL’s online outage-reporting system. The telephone outage line is available anytime.
How can I check an FPL outage?
Use the FPL Power Tracker. Restoration estimates can change as crews inspect and repair the problem.
What is the customer-service number for FPL Northwest?
FPL Northwest lists 1-888-326-4853. Use the regional account and support pages when the bill or service address belongs to Northwest Florida.
Why is my FPL bill suddenly higher?
The total may be affected by increased energy use, the number of billing days, weather, current rates, a prior balance, a deposit, payment charges, Budget Billing adjustments or another account item. Compare kWh usage and each line item before contacting FPL for an explanation.
How do I dispute an FPL bill?
Contact FPL customer support, explain the exact charge or usage period being questioned and request a case number and written explanation. Continue protecting the due date while the matter is reviewed unless FPL confirms another arrangement.
Why did FPL request an additional deposit?
FPL states that account and payment history can affect deposit reviews. Its payment-extension page says repeated late payments may trigger a review of whether the deposit held is sufficient. Ask FPL for the calculation and the conditions under which the deposit may later be adjusted or refunded.
Does FPL Budget Billing reduce my electric costs?
No. FPL states that Budget Billing changes when customers pay their energy costs, not how much they ultimately pay for the electricity used. Differences are tracked through a deferred balance.
Does an FPL payment extension prevent a late fee?
Not necessarily. FPL states that an approved extension may still be considered late and may result in a late-payment charge or deposit review. Read the terms shown before accepting the extension.
Can I submit a claim for spoiled food or damaged equipment?
FPL provides an official equipment and food-loss claim process, but approval depends on the cause, responsibility, documentation and applicable rules. FPL’s policy excludes several circumstances, including many weather-related events.
Is FPL Home the same as Florida Power & Light?
FPL says FPL Home is an unregulated subsidiary. Some surge-protection or home-service products are offered or administered through FPL Home rather than the regulated electric utility. Check the agreement before choosing a complaint or claim route.
Does a 0 rating mean customers gave FPL neutral reviews?
No. When this article was created, the listing displayed 0 because no Zero Stars reviews had been published. A genuine 0-star customer rating represents a neutral or evenly mixed experience.
Can Zero Stars report my outage, change my bill or prevent disconnection?
No. ZeroStars.org is an independent review platform. It cannot access an FPL account, report an outage, dispatch a crew, change a bill, grant an extension, refund a deposit, approve a claim or stop a disconnection. Use the appropriate official FPL or regulatory channel.
What To Include in an FPL Review
