Overview

Ally Bank reviews and complaints can help other consumers understand experiences involving Spending and Savings accounts, debit cards, CDs, wire transfers, credit cards, auto financing, mortgages, investing, fraud claims, disputes and customer service. Share what happened, which Ally product you used, how you tried to resolve the issue and whether the outcome was satisfactory. Positive, neutral and negative experiences are welcome on ZeroStars’ −5 to +5 rating scale.

Ally offers banking, credit-card, auto-finance, home-loan and investing products through different affiliated entities and servicing channels. Phone numbers, fees, limits, dispute procedures and account protections can vary by product, so use the support route tied to your specific account whenever possible.

What to Include in Your Ally Bank Review
  • Product: Spending Account, Savings Account, Money Market, CD, debit card, credit card, auto financing, mortgage, Invest account or another Ally service.
  • Issue: hold, unauthorized transaction, fraud claim, transfer delay, card problem, payment posting, account restriction, fee, servicing problem or closure.
  • Timeline: approximate dates, support contacts and how long the issue remained unresolved.
  • Support route: phone, secure message, app, website, dispute process or servicing portal.
  • Resolution: what Ally said or did and whether funds, access, disputed charges, title issues or loan-servicing problems were resolved.

Do not post full account or card numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords, PINs, one-time codes, routing details tied to your personal account or unredacted financial documents.

Account Access and Holds

Ally may restrict access or delay a transaction when security, identity-verification, fraud or legal concerns require additional review. If an account or transfer is restricted, document the date, amount, affected account, error message and any case or reference number.

For eCheck deposits, Ally says deposited funds are generally available by the second business day, although longer holds can apply to new accounts, larger checks and other situations. Ally states that when a hold is imposed it will notify the customer and provide an expected availability date.

Fraud and Unauthorized Transactions

Ally lists 1-833-226-1520 for fraud reporting. For unauthorized online-banking transfers, Ally’s current online-banking agreement also directs customers to call 1-877-247-2559 immediately.

Prompt reporting is important. Ally’s current terms say customers who see unauthorized electronic transfers on a statement should notify Ally at once, and certain protections can be affected if the issue is not reported within 60 days after the statement is made available.

Keep the date you discovered the activity, the transaction amount, whether your debit card or device remained in your possession, when you contacted Ally and any claim or provisional-credit information you receive.

Debit and Credit Card Problems

Ally Bank debit cards can be locked through online banking or the mobile app. If a debit card is lost or stolen, Ally allows customers to report and replace the card online or in the app. Card activation is available at 1-833-414-4855.

For Ally Credit Card servicing, use 1-888-366-2559. Credit-card billing disputes, fraud reports, APRs, fees and payment rights are governed by the applicable cardmember agreement and current statement.

Disputes and Billing Errors

For bank-account electronic-transfer errors, contact Ally promptly at 1-877-247-2559. Ally’s account agreements contain formal error-resolution rules for unauthorized or incorrect transfers.

For debit-card transaction issues, keep the merchant name, date, amount and any supporting documentation. For an Ally Credit Card billing dispute, follow the dispute instructions and address shown on the current statement or cardmember agreement.

Do not assume that a bank-account dispute and a credit-card billing dispute follow the same process or deadline.

Transfers and Wire Transfers

Ally Bank supports transfers between Ally accounts and linked external bank accounts, plus outgoing domestic wire transfers. Ally currently charges $20 for each outgoing domestic wire, with that fee refunded for eligible wires sent from Ally Bank to Ally Invest.

Ally does not charge a fee to receive a wire, although sending or intermediary banks may charge fees. Ally does not send outgoing international wires, but it can receive international wires through a designated receiving bank.

To reduce fraud risk, Ally currently limits outgoing wires to $25,000 during the first 90 days after a customer opens their first Ally Bank account, subject to exception requests. Most other wire amounts are limited by available funds and account eligibility.

Checking, Savings and CDs

Ally Bank, Member FDIC, offers Spending, Savings, Money Market and Certificate of Deposit accounts. Rates, APYs, withdrawal limits and account features can change.

Ally eCheck Deposit is available through the app and online for eligible accounts. Ally currently allows eCheck deposits up to $50,000 in a single business day and up to $250,000 every 30 calendar days.

If your complaint involves a deposit hold, missing ACH transfer, direct deposit or CD transaction, retain deposit confirmations, statements and any notice explaining funds availability or account status.

Fees and Account Closures

Ally Bank generally markets deposit accounts without monthly maintenance fees, but transaction-specific charges can still apply, including outgoing wire fees and certain service-related charges. Credit-card, auto-finance, mortgage and investing products have separate fee and pricing structures.

If your complaint involves a fee or account closure, identify the account, fee description or closure notice, the date it appeared and the explanation Ally provided. If closure affects pending transfers, recurring payments, interest, titles, investments or loan servicing, document any deadlines and instructions you receive.

Mobile App and Online Banking

The Ally app and website support account management, eCheck deposits, transfers, debit-card controls, secure messaging, auto-finance servicing and other features. Ally Bank customer service is available 24/7 at 1-877-247-2559.

If a digital-access problem occurs, note whether it affects the app, website or both, the device and browser or app version, the approximate time and any error message. Never provide passwords or one-time verification codes to an unsolicited caller.

Auto Financing

Ally Auto provides consumer vehicle financing and leasing. General Auto support is available at 1-888-925-2559. Customers can manage payments, statements, payoff quotes, title or lien-release status and other account details online or in the Ally app.

Auto-payment complaints may involve due dates, late fees, payoff amounts, lease-end issues, title releases or payment allocation. Ally lists Ally Financial, P.O. Box 380901, Bloomington, MN 55438 for payment disputes, restricted payments and customer-service correspondence.

If your auto complaint involves a third-party debit-card payment service, note that Ally currently uses CheckFreePay for certain one-time debit-card payments and that CheckFreePay charges its own service fee.

Home Loans and Mortgages

Existing Ally home-loan customers can call 1-866-401-4742. Mortgage payment addresses, escrow procedures, payoff instructions and error-resolution rights depend on the specific loan and servicing documents.

If your complaint involves a mortgage payment, escrow issue, payoff, servicing transfer or account correction, retain statements, notices and payment confirmations.

Investing

Ally Invest support is available at 1-855-880-2559. Brokerage products are not bank deposits and can lose value. Ally Invest customer correspondence and check-processing instructions differ from Ally Bank deposit-account instructions.

If your complaint involves a trade, transfer, cash balance, account restriction or brokerage service, document the account type, transaction date, security involved and any order or transfer confirmation.
