What Is American Airlines?
American Airlines is a major U.S. airline operated within American Airlines Group Inc. The company lists its corporate headquarters at 1 Skyview Drive in Fort Worth, Texas. American operates domestic and international passenger service and also runs the AAdvantage loyalty program.
Common American Airlines Complaints
Public complaint sources and review sites show recurring themes involving delayed and canceled flights, difficulty rebooking after disruptions, baggage problems, refund and travel-credit disputes, long waits for support, and inconsistent communication. These reports describe individual experiences and do not establish what every passenger will experience.
Flight Delays, Cancellations and Rebooking
When a flight changes before departure, American recommends using AA.com or the American app to manage the trip where possible. For reservations and ticket changes in the U.S. and Canada, American lists 1-800-433-7300 for English-language support 24 hours a day.
For complaints about travel that has already happened, American directs customers to its online Customer Relations process. American asks customers to include contact details, the confirmation code or ticket number, flight number, travel date, origin and destination.
American Airlines Baggage Complaints
American says passengers with delayed or damaged baggage should file a report as soon as possible. For domestic trips, the airline says delayed bags should generally be reported within four hours of arrival, or within 12 hours when Bags VIP Luggage Delivery was used. Travelers receive a 13-character file ID that can be used to track the bag and support a claim.
If a bag has been delayed for five or more days, American asks the customer to submit additional information through its online claim process. The airline’s current delayed or damaged baggage page explains the reporting and claim steps.
American Airlines Refunds and Travel Credits
American provides an online refund request and status tool for tickets and eligible travel products purchased directly from American Airlines. If the ticket was bought from a travel agent or another website, American directs the customer back to that seller for refund help.
For a refund dispute, save the ticket number, confirmation code, payment record, cancellation or delay notices, and any written response from American. The official receipts and refunds page is the best place to start for a direct American Airlines purchase.
AAdvantage Complaints and Loyalty Points
American lists 1-800-882-8880 for AAdvantage account service and award travel in the U.S. and Canada, available 24 hours a day. Under the current program, members earn Loyalty Points toward status, and American says one eligible AAdvantage mile generally earns one Loyalty Point. The status qualification year runs from March 1 through the last day of February the following year.
American’s 2026 program includes Loyalty Point Rewards at multiple thresholds, with reward choices and status-related benefits depending on the member’s qualifying activity. Program rules and individual reward expiration dates can change, so members should check the current terms in their AAdvantage account before relying on a reward or benefit.
American Airlines BBB Complaints
As checked on September 17, 2026, the Better Business Bureau profile for American Airlines headquarters displayed an A rating and stated that the company was not BBB accredited. The profile listed 6,878 complaints in the previous three years and 1,809 complaints closed in the previous 12 months.
BBB says that this profile includes the headquarters and corporate-owned locations. Complaint totals should be interpreted in context: American is a very large airline with a high volume of passenger transactions, and BBB complaint counts are not a complaint rate or a representative survey of all customers.
American Airlines Trustpilot Reviews
As checked on September 17, 2026, the main Trustpilot profile for www.aa.com displayed a 1.3 out of 5 TrustScore from 3,476 reviews. The profile showed 72% 1-star reviews and was labeled unclaimed.
Trustpilot reviews are voluntary and self-selected. They can be useful for identifying recurring complaint themes, but they should not be treated as a representative measure of all American Airlines passengers.
