Overview
Sonic Drive-In reviews and complaints commonly focus on incorrect or missing orders, long waits, food quality, drive-thru and stall service, app problems, refunds, SONIC Rewards, gift cards, delivery and customer service. Because about 95% of SONIC drive-ins are locally owned franchises, the restaurant location and ordering method matter when evaluating a complaint.

Sonic Drive-In Reviews and Complaints
Sonic is best known for its drive-in format, carhop service, burgers, hot dogs, tots, slushes, shakes and customizable drinks. Public feedback includes both positive and negative experiences. Positive reviews often mention friendly carhops, convenient Order Ahead service and drinks, while complaints often involve long waits, incorrect items, cold food, missing products, broken stall equipment, app problems and difficulty getting a refund or response.
Because most SONIC restaurants are franchised, one store’s performance should not automatically be treated as representative of the entire brand. Store management, staffing, equipment, preparation and refund handling can vary by location.
Common Sonic Drive-In Complaints
Long Wait Times
Wait time is one of the most common themes in public SONIC reviews. Customers sometimes report waiting at a stall, in the drive-thru or for an Order Ahead pickup longer than expected. Busy periods, staffing shortages, equipment problems and order complexity can all affect service times.
Incorrect or Missing Orders
Customers report missing burgers, sauces, drinks, sides or customizations. Check the order before leaving when practical, especially for large or highly customized purchases. For app orders, keep the order confirmation and receipt.
Cold or Poor-Quality Food
Complaints can involve cold burgers, undercooked or overcooked items, stale fries or tots, melted frozen desserts or food that appears to have been held too long. If the issue could involve food safety, stop eating the item, keep the receipt and packaging when practical, take photos and report the concern promptly.
Stall, Speaker and Carhop Service
SONIC’s drive-in format creates some unique complaint types, including nonworking stall buttons, inaudible speakers, closed stalls and difficulty getting a response after checking in. When reporting a location problem, include the stall number if known along with the restaurant address and time of visit.
Sonic App and Order Ahead Complaints
The SONIC app and website allow Order Ahead at participating restaurants. App-related complaints can include login problems, payment failures, orders sent to the wrong location, unavailable menu items, a completed charge with no visible order or problems redeeming a promotion or reward.
Before placing an order, confirm the restaurant, pickup method, customization, reward or promotion and payment total. If the app fails, save screenshots before retrying so you can distinguish a temporary authorization from a completed order.
Sonic Refund Complaints
For a restaurant-order problem, start with the drive-in when possible. If the location does not resolve the issue, SONIC lists its Customer Satisfaction Team at 1-866-657-6642 and provides an online contact form for restaurant-specific complaints.
Keep the receipt, order number, restaurant location, date, time and payment record. If a refund is approved, ask how it will be returned and how long processing may take. Timing can depend on the payment method and whether SONIC or a third-party provider processed the order.
SONIC Rewards Complaints
SONIC launched its current Rewards program on April 6, 2026. Members currently earn 10 points per $1 spent on qualifying purchases. After 10 qualifying visits, members unlock Star status and earn 11 points per $1. After 30 qualifying visits, members unlock Legend status and earn 12 points per $1, along with an additional selectable benefit.
SONIC states that points are valid for one year from the date earned. Menu-item rewards generally expire 60 days after redemption into a reward. Purchases made through third-party delivery platforms do not earn Rewards points.
Common Rewards complaints include missing points, rewards not appearing, promo codes not working or an order not being linked to the correct account. SONIC says Customer Care can manually apply qualifying points in some situations when a participating location’s system is unavailable.
Sonic Promo Code and Offer Complaints
Promo codes can have date, location and purchase restrictions. SONIC states that app Rewards and promo codes cannot be combined for redemption. If a promotion appears valid but does not apply, save the offer terms and checkout screenshot before contacting Customer Care.
Sonic Delivery Complaints
SONIC delivery availability varies by market and provider. Third-party delivery orders can involve separate rules for refunds, driver complaints and missing orders. If the order was placed directly through a delivery app, use that provider’s support process for driver, tracking and payment issues while also contacting the SONIC location when food preparation or missing items are involved.
Sonic Gift Card Complaints
SONIC says its gift cards do not expire or decrease in value. Physical cards can be used at participating drive-ins or loaded into the SONIC app. App eGift cards are limited to app orders. For lost cards or balance problems, SONIC directs customers to 1-866-657-6642 and advises having the card number and proof of purchase available.
Do not publish a complete gift-card number or PIN in a public complaint.
Sonic BBB Rating and Complaints
As of September 17, 2026, the Better Business Bureau profile for Sonic Drive-In Corporate Headquarters in Oklahoma City displayed an F rating and stated that the business was not BBB accredited. BBB cited failure to respond to two complaints as the reason for the rating.
The same corporate headquarters profile displayed two complaints during the previous three years and none closed during the previous 12 months. BBB also maintains separate profiles for individual SONIC restaurants, so complaint totals can differ substantially by location and should not be combined as though they represent one national profile.
Sonic Trustpilot Reviews
As of September 17, 2026, SonicDriveIn.com’s unclaimed Trustpilot profile displayed a 1.6 out of 5 TrustScore from 376 reviews. The displayed distribution included 78% one-star reviews and 7% five-star reviews. Trustpilot stated that SONIC had not been inviting reviews, so the sample may not represent all customers.
Recent review themes include long waits, incorrect orders, cold or poorly prepared food, app-order issues and inconsistent store service. These are individual consumer reports rather than a representative nationwide survey.
How to File a Sonic Drive-In Complaint
- Start with the restaurant. For a current food, stall, drive-thru or pickup issue, ask for the manager at the location involved.
- Keep documentation. Save the receipt, order number, screenshots, photos, stall number and delivery confirmation when relevant.
- Contact SONIC Customer Satisfaction. Call 1-866-657-6642 or use the official contact form if the drive-in does not resolve the concern.
- Identify the ordering channel. For third-party delivery, also use the delivery provider’s complaint or refund process.
- Explain the requested resolution. State whether you are seeking a replacement, refund, Rewards adjustment or management follow-up.

Sonic Franchise vs. Corporate Complaints
SONIC states that approximately 95% of its more than 3,600 drive-ins are locally owned franchises. Local franchisees generally control staffing, restaurant management, food preparation, wait times and many store-level refunds. SONIC corporate systems manage the brand, app, Rewards and broader Customer Satisfaction support.
When filing a complaint, identify whether the problem is tied to a specific restaurant, the app, Rewards, delivery, a gift card or a corporate policy. That distinction helps route the issue to the party that can resolve it.
