Overview
Venmo reviews and complaints can help other consumers understand experiences involving peer-to-peer payments, bank transfers, Instant Transfers, account restrictions, unauthorized transactions, purchase disputes, the Venmo Debit Card, the Venmo Credit Card, business profiles and customer service. Share what happened, which Venmo feature or account you used, what steps you took to resolve the issue and whether the outcome was satisfactory. Positive, neutral and negative experiences are welcome on ZeroStars’ −5 to +5 rating scale.
Venmo is a service of PayPal, Inc. and different Venmo products use different agreements and support channels. The Venmo Debit Mastercard is issued by The Bancorp Bank, N.A., while the Venmo Credit Card is issued by Synchrony Bank. Fees, eligibility, account limits, dispute rights and card procedures vary by product, so use the support route tied to the specific issue.
What to Include in Your Venmo Review
- Product or feature: personal account, Teen Account, business profile, Venmo Debit Card, Venmo Credit Card, bank transfer or purchase payment.
- Issue: frozen account, unauthorized payment, failed transfer, dispute, card charge, fee, refund, identity-verification problem or customer-service issue.
- Timeline: approximate dates, support contacts, dispute dates and how long the issue remained unresolved.
- Support route: app chat, phone, dispute process, debit-card support or Synchrony Bank credit-card support.
- Resolution: what Venmo or the card issuer said or did and whether funds, access or disputed charges were restored.
Do not post your full card number, bank account number, Social Security number, password, one-time security codes, PIN, recovery information or unredacted identity documents.
Account Access, Frozen Accounts and Identity Verification
Venmo may freeze, suspend or restrict an account when activity appears inconsistent with its User Agreement, when a payment fails, when identity verification is required or when additional documentation is needed. Restrictions can affect sending, receiving or transferring money.
Venmo directs users with a suspended or frozen account to check email and in-app notifications for the specific reason and required next steps. If a restriction relates to a failed payment, the app may prompt the user to repay the amount owed. If documents are requested, retain copies of what you submit and note the submission date.
Fraud and Unauthorized Transactions
If you believe a payment or transfer was made from your Venmo account without permission, Venmo says to report it immediately. You can contact Venmo at 855-812-4430 or write to PayPal, Inc., Attn: Venmo Error Resolution Department, P.O. Box 45950, Omaha, NE 68145-0950.
Venmo’s current User Agreement states that filing a chargeback or reversal with your bank or card issuer does not by itself notify Venmo of an unauthorized Venmo transaction. Venmo must be contacted directly.
For Venmo account statement errors other than certain purchase claims, Venmo generally requires notice within 60 days after the first statement showing the problem. Different rules apply to debit-card and credit-card transactions under their respective card agreements.
Venmo Debit Card Problems
The Venmo Debit Mastercard is issued by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. and accesses the user’s Venmo balance. Venmo’s current cardholder agreement lists 855-204-4090 for unauthorized transactions, card errors and transaction-history questions.
If the card is lost or stolen and you cannot use the app, Venmo says 855-204-4090 can be used to deactivate the card 24 hours a day. Live-agent availability for debit-card support is more limited than the deactivation line.
Keep the transaction date, amount, merchant name, whether the physical card remained in your possession and any dispute reference number. The cardholder agreement contains specific deadlines and provisional-credit procedures for card errors.
Venmo Credit Card Problems
The Venmo Credit Card is issued by Synchrony Bank. Venmo directs cardholders to the phone number on the back of the card for 24/7 credit-card support. If the card is lost or stolen, Venmo lists 855-878-6462 for Synchrony Bank support.
Credit-card billing errors, unauthorized card charges, APRs, fees and payment disputes are governed by the applicable Synchrony Bank Venmo Credit Card agreement rather than the general Venmo account error process.
Disputes and Purchase Protection
Venmo allows disputes for unauthorized activity, eligible purchase problems, billing errors and certain subscription issues. Venmo’s current dispute guidance states that Item Not Received and Significantly Not as Described disputes generally must be opened within 180 days of the payment.
For unauthorized activity in a Venmo account, Venmo says to report it at once. For other account errors, Venmo generally requires notice no later than 60 days after the first statement showing the problem.
Venmo Purchase Protection applies only to eligible purchase transactions, such as qualifying payments to authorized business profiles or payments specifically identified as purchases. Ordinary personal payments to people you know are not automatically treated as protected commercial purchases.
Bank Transfers and Instant Transfers
Venmo offers Standard and Instant Transfers from a Venmo balance to eligible bank accounts or debit cards. Standard bank transfers are generally free and typically arrive within one to three business days. Venmo says an eligible Standard transfer may be canceled or changed to an Instant Transfer within a one-hour window in the app.
Instant Transfers generally arrive within about 30 minutes and currently carry a 1.75% fee, with a minimum fee of $0.25 and a maximum fee of $25. Eligibility depends on the receiving bank account or debit card, and Venmo may review, delay, decline or block a transfer.
For verified personal accounts, Venmo currently publishes transfer limits that can differ from unverified accounts and may change. Check the app for the limit applying to your account before initiating a large transfer.
Fees and Account Closures
Venmo’s current fee schedule lists no monthly account fee and no fee for standard withdrawals or for sending personal payments funded by a Venmo balance, debit card or bank account. Sending money to another Venmo or U.S. PayPal account using a credit card currently carries a 3% fee.
Instant Transfers currently cost 1.75% subject to minimum and maximum fees. Business, charity, purchase, cash-a-check, cryptocurrency and other specialized services use separate fee schedules.
If your complaint involves a fee or account closure, identify the specific transaction or profile, fee label, date and any Venmo notice explaining the action. Document what happens to remaining funds and any pending transfers or disputes.
Mobile App and Online Support
Venmo’s app is the primary place for payments, disputes, account settings, card controls and chat support. Venmo also provides Help Center support on the web. General phone support at 855-812-4430 is available every day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central.
If a digital-access problem occurs, note whether it affects the app, website or both, the device and app or browser version, the approximate time and any error message. Never provide a one-time verification code or password to an unsolicited caller.
Business Profiles and Goods or Services
Venmo allows authorized commercial payments through business profiles and certain personal-profile payments that are tagged as purchases. Eligible purchase transactions may qualify for Venmo Purchase Protection, subject to the current User Agreement.
Business-profile and purchase payments can carry seller transaction fees. If a business-profile dispute involves delivery or service quality, keep invoices, shipping information, refund records and messages with the buyer or seller.
Teen Accounts
Venmo Teen Accounts are extensions of an eligible parent or guardian account and have more limited features than standard adult accounts. Teen users can use the Venmo Teen Debit Card, Direct Deposit and certain peer-to-peer payment functions, but cannot use every Venmo product.
Parents or guardians receive notifications about certain Teen Account activity. Unauthorized transactions on Teen Accounts should be reported through the same Venmo error-resolution process described in the current User Agreement.
