Overview
Citizens Bank reviews and complaints can help other consumers understand experiences involving checking and savings accounts, debit cards, credit cards, overdrafts, wire transfers, mortgages, fraud claims, transaction disputes, digital banking and customer service. Share what happened, which Citizens product you used, how you tried to resolve the issue and whether the outcome was satisfactory. Positive, neutral and negative experiences are welcome on ZeroStars’ −5 to +5 rating scale.
This page covers Citizens Bank, N.A. consumer banking in the United States. Citizens uses separate servicing routes for deposit accounts, debit cards, credit cards, fraud, digital banking and mortgages. Product terms, fees, eligibility, account limits and dispute procedures vary, so use the route tied to your specific account whenever possible.
What to Include in Your Citizens Bank Review
- Product: checking, savings, debit card, credit card, mortgage, wire transfer or another Citizens product.
- Issue: fraud claim, merchant dispute, overdraft, deposit hold, transfer delay, fee, account restriction, card problem, mortgage servicing or digital-access issue.
- Timeline: approximate dates, support contacts and how long the matter remained unresolved.
- Support route: phone, branch, mobile app, Online Banking, secure support or written correspondence.
- Resolution: what Citizens said or did and whether funds, account access, disputed charges or loan issues were resolved.
Do not post your full account or card number, Social Security number, password, PIN, one-time security codes, routing details tied to your personal account or unredacted statements.
Account Access and Deposit Holds
Citizens may restrict or review account activity when security, identity-verification, fraud, legal or account-risk concerns require additional review. If an account or transaction is restricted, document the exact message, date, amount and any case number.
Funds availability depends on the deposit type and Citizens’ current Funds Availability Policy. If a check or mobile deposit is held longer than expected, keep the deposit confirmation, amount, date and any notice showing when the funds are scheduled to become available.
Fraud and Unauthorized Transactions
Citizens currently lists a dedicated Fraud Customer Service Center at 1-800-974-2260. Debit-card fraud can also be reported directly from a transaction in the Citizens mobile app, and claim status for debit and ATM card disputes can be checked there.
For suspected unauthorized Citizens credit-card transactions, call 1-888-307-9565 or use the number on the back of the card or monthly statement. Citizens says it will not ask customers to provide online-banking login credentials in an unsolicited phone call or email.
Keep the date you discovered the activity, transaction amount, whether your card remained in your possession, when you contacted Citizens and any claim or provisional-credit information you receive.
Debit and Credit Card Problems
For debit-card issues, Citizens lists 1-888-861-5700. A lost or stolen Citizens debit card should be reported promptly at 1-800-922-9999. Citizens also allows eligible debit and ATM cards to be frozen or unfrozen in the mobile app.
Citizens credit-card servicing and fraud are handled separately from deposit-account support. For unauthorized credit-card activity, Citizens lists 1-888-307-9565.
Card complaints may involve merchant charges, declines, replacement cards, fraud blocks, payments, billing errors, rewards or account closures. The cardholder agreement and statement control the formal billing-error process.
Disputes and Billing Errors
Citizens lets customers initiate eligible debit-card fraud claims from the mobile app by selecting the transaction in question. Other debit-card, ATM or deposit-account claims can be reported through customer service.
For digital-service payment or transfer errors, Citizens’ current Digital Terms state that customers should notify the bank as soon as possible and generally no later than 60 days after the first statement showing the error. Notices can be made by phone at 1-800-922-9999 or in writing to Citizens Bank, C/O Digital Services, One Citizens Drive, Riverside, RI 02915.
For credit-card billing errors, follow the current statement and cardholder agreement. Keep receipts, merchant correspondence, cancellation or return records and any Citizens case number.
Transfers, Wires and Zelle
Citizens supports internal and external transfers, Zelle and wire transfers for eligible accounts. Wire procedures and fees depend on the account and transaction type.
Citizens notes that domestic wires generally clear within one business day, while international wires usually require at least two to three business days and can take longer depending on the receiving country, intermediary institutions and banking holidays.
Wire transfers are difficult to reverse after they are sent. Verify the recipient’s name, bank routing or SWIFT information and account number carefully, and keep the wire confirmation if the transfer becomes part of a complaint.
Overdrafts and Account Fees
Citizens currently lists a standard overdraft fee of $35 per item paid, with a maximum of five overdraft fees in one day on eligible accounts. Citizens also has account-specific exceptions and programs that can reduce or reverse certain charges.
$5 Overdraft Pass generally prevents an overdraft fee when the transaction itself is $5 or less or the account is overdrawn by $5 or less. Citizens Peace of Mind can allow eligible checking customers additional time to restore a positive available balance and receive qualifying overdraft-fee reversals.
Some accounts, including Citizens EverValue Checking, use different overdraft treatment and may not be charged standard overdraft fees. Always check the current account disclosure for the specific product involved.
Checking, Savings and CDs
Citizens Bank, N.A. is a Member FDIC institution. Eligible deposits are insured subject to standard FDIC ownership-category limits.
Citizens offers checking, savings, money market and certificate products with different monthly fees, balance requirements, APYs and waiver conditions. Product terms and rates can change.
If your complaint involves a deposit hold, ACH transfer, direct deposit, monthly fee or account closure, keep statements, deposit confirmations and any notice explaining availability or account status.
Mobile App and Online Banking
Citizens Online Banking and the Citizens mobile app support balances, transfers, Bill Pay, mobile check deposit, debit-card controls, disputes and other account functions.
Current support numbers are 1-800-656-6561 for Online Banking and 1-877-353-9274 for Mobile Banking. Both currently list Monday–Friday 7 a.m.–10 p.m. Eastern and Saturday–Sunday 9 a.m.–6 p.m. Eastern support hours.
If a digital-access problem occurs, note whether it affects the app, website or both, the device and app or browser version, the approximate time and any error message.
Mortgages and Home Loans
Existing mortgage customers can call 1-800-234-6002, Monday–Friday 8 a.m.–8 p.m. Eastern. For new mortgage or refinance inquiries, Citizens currently lists 1-888-514-2300.
Citizens directs certain formal mortgage servicing notices, including possible errors, requests for information and some credit-reporting disputes, to Citizens, Attn: Customer Service, P.O. Box 6260, Glen Allen, VA 23058-6260.
If your complaint involves escrow, payment posting, payoff, servicing transfers or hardship assistance, keep statements, notices and payment confirmations.
