Overview
BMO reviews and complaints can help other consumers understand experiences involving checking and savings accounts, debit cards, credit cards, Zelle, wire transfers, mortgages, fraud claims, disputes, overdrafts, digital banking and customer service. Share what happened, which BMO product you used, how you tried to resolve the issue and whether the outcome was satisfactory. Positive, neutral and negative experiences are welcome on ZeroStars’ −5 to +5 rating scale.
This page covers BMO Bank N.A. consumer banking in the United States. BMO uses different servicing routes for deposit accounts, credit cards, wires, mortgages and other lending products. Terms, fees, eligibility, transaction limits and dispute procedures vary by product and account agreement, so use the route tied to your specific account whenever possible.
What to Include in Your BMO Review
- Product: checking, savings, debit card, credit card, mortgage, loan, Zelle, wire transfer or another BMO service.
- Issue: account hold, fraud claim, card dispute, transfer delay, overdraft, fee, account closure or digital-access problem.
- Timeline: approximate dates, support contacts and how long the issue remained unresolved.
- Support route: phone, branch, BMO Digital Banking, secure message or written correspondence.
- Resolution: what BMO said or did and whether funds, account access, disputed charges or loan issues were resolved.
Do not post full account or card numbers, Social Security numbers, passwords, PINs, one-time verification codes, routing details tied to your personal account or unredacted financial documents.
Account Access and Deposit Holds
BMO may delay or restrict transactions when security, identity-verification, fraud, legal or account-review concerns require additional attention. If an account or transfer is restricted, keep the exact message, date, affected account, amount and any case or reference number.
Mobile deposits are not immediately available for withdrawal, and BMO’s current disclosures direct customers to the applicable Funds Availability Policy for timing. Keep deposit receipts, mobile-deposit confirmations and any hold notices if availability becomes part of a complaint.
Fraud and Unauthorized Transactions
BMO lists 1-888-340-2265 for suspected fraud and unusual account activity. BMO also tells customers to use the contact information on the back of their card if a caller, text or email claiming to be BMO seems suspicious.
For unauthorized BMO credit-card activity, current card guidance directs customers to the product-specific credit-card number, including 1-855-825-9237 for several standard U.S. card products.
Keep the date you discovered the activity, transaction amount, whether the card remained in your possession, when you contacted BMO and any dispute or provisional-credit information you receive.
Debit and Credit Card Problems
BMO debit cards can be managed through Digital Banking. Debit-card activation and PIN help are available through 1-888-340-2265.
BMO credit-card support depends on the card family. Current BMO materials list 1-855-825-9237 for Platinum, Platinum Rewards, Cash Back and Boost Secured cards, while Premium Rewards and Escape cards use 1-855-825-9238.
If a card is lost or stolen, report it promptly rather than relying only on a temporary digital lock or merchant block.
Disputes and Billing Errors
For credit-card disputes, BMO recommends contacting the merchant first when the problem involves goods or services. If the issue remains unresolved, call the number on the back of the card or the applicable BMO credit-card servicing number.
For debit-card or deposit-account transaction problems, call 1-888-340-2265. Fraud and merchant disputes can follow different procedures, so clearly identify whether the transaction was unauthorized or whether you authorized it but dispute the merchant’s performance.
Keep receipts, merchant correspondence, cancellation or return records and any BMO case number. Formal billing-error rights can depend on written notice and product-specific deadlines.
Transfers, Wires and Zelle
BMO supports domestic and international wires for eligible customers. Current BMO Digital Banking FAQs list a $30 domestic wire fee and a $50 international wire fee, subject to account type and any relationship-based benefits.
Domestic wires are typically processed and released by BMO Bank N.A. the same day, while international delivery normally takes several business days. BMO lists 1-877-696-7379 for retail and small-business wire-transfer questions.
BMO also supports Zelle for eligible consumer accounts through Digital Banking. Only send money to people or businesses you know and trust because Zelle transfers can be difficult to reverse after authorization.
Overdrafts and Account Fees
BMO’s overdraft rules vary by checking product. Current guidance says an overdraft fee is not charged in several situations, including when the account is overdrawn by $20 or less at the applicable end-of-day checkpoints, and BMO caps the number of overdraft fees charged per business day under its standard service rules.
Some accounts, including Smart Money Checking, use different overdraft treatment. Monthly maintenance fees, ATM fees, stop-payment fees and waiver conditions also depend on the product.
If your complaint involves an overdraft or other fee, identify the exact account, transaction, fee label, date and any balance or deposit timing that affected the charge.
Checking, Savings and CDs
BMO Bank N.A. offers checking, savings, money market and certificate products. BMO Bank N.A. is a Member FDIC institution, and eligible deposits are insured subject to standard ownership-category limits.
Current BMO products differ in monthly-fee structures, minimum opening deposits, APYs and waiver conditions. Savings and CD rates can change, and CDs may have early-withdrawal restrictions or penalties.
If your complaint involves a deposit hold, direct deposit, ACH transfer, mobile deposit or account fee, keep statements, deposit confirmations and any notice explaining availability or account status.
Mobile App and Digital Banking
BMO Digital Banking supports balances, transfers, bill pay, Zelle, debit-card management, mobile deposits and other account functions. Automated BMO Bank by Phone service is available around the clock at 1-888-340-2265.
If a digital-access problem occurs, note whether it affects the app, website or both, the device and browser or app version, the approximate time and any error message. BMO states that it will not contact customers unsolicited to ask for passwords, PINs or verification codes.
Mortgages and Other Loans
BMO lists 1-888-482-3781 for mortgage specialists and new mortgage inquiries. Current mortgage pages list weekday mortgage-banker hours that vary by program.
For servicing or assistance on real-estate-secured loans and lines of credit, BMO currently lists 1-855-290-4759. Payment addresses, escrow procedures, payoff instructions and hardship options depend on the individual loan and servicing documents.
If your complaint involves payment posting, escrow, payoff, loan assistance or a servicing transfer, retain statements, payment confirmations and written notices.
